MT. KUNYIT HIKING
This active volcano, in the southern end of the valley, gets its name “Kunyit” (turmeric) from the abundant sulfur that can be found on the mountain. During the six hour trek to the summit, you pass through enchanted cloud forests and encounter steaming sulfur vents, making for an interesting climb. On the return, you’ll visit a site of hot springs and fumarole vents, a small waterfall, and a wetlands area filled with many different kinds of Nepenthes pitcher plants. The starting point is the village of Talang Kumuning, one hour south of Sungaipenuh. Within the crater is the mystical “Taman Dewa” or “Garden of the Gods” where the local hero Depati Parbo meditated during the conflict with the Dutch, legendarily gaining invulnerability to their bullets as a result.
Day 1 -Up into the clouds
In the morning, meet your guides in the village of Talang Kemuning. You’ll pass through rice paddies and ample amounts of Rainforest Alliance certified cinnamon forest as you head into the hills. Once on the mountain, you’ll hike up and down ridge trails, eventually heading into cloud forest close to the top. Be on the lookout for ratan vines and pitcher plants. After about 5-6 hours of trekking, make camp near a little stream not far from a steaming sulfur vent, about an hour from the summit.
Day 2 -Exploring the Crater
Wake in the morning and climb up to the summit. On the way, be on the lookout for the recently discovered flower, Impatiens kunyitensis. If the weather is clear, to the east you can see as far as the Indian ocean. After you’re done enjoying the view, climb down into the crater using ropes as support in a few of the steeper spots, and explore the mystical “Taman Dewa.”
When you’re ready to return, climb back out of the crater and head down the volcano. Make camp in the cinnamon forest.

Day 3 - Hot Spring, Waterfall, and Wetlands
Hike to the, hot springs in the morning, and freshen up in one of the warm little natural pools in the river. Swing by the waterfall on your way to the wetland area, seeing how many different varieties of pitcher plants you can find along the way. Finish up in the village of Lempur, where either your ride back to Sungaipenuh, or a homestay with a local family will be waiting for you.

The trek up is challenging in several spots as you wind your way through the forest and up narrow ridge trails. Ascending and descending into the crater is also tricky, and you’ll find the use of a rope or forest vine helpful in a couple spots. Temperatures can be a quite chilly during the night (+/- 12C), so bring a jacket or enough clothing to layer. Also, always be prepared for rain, no matter the season, when you’re in a rainforest.
Price includes a local guide and porter, transport within Kerinci to and from the trail head, permits, and all food and equipment. Price per person reduced with more than two travelers, but usually limited to a max of six people to lessen the impact on the environment.
